>Inscription#0008: " "You're always listening to music so I didn't wanna bother you" "
That's what I got from a classmate one day when she noticed we were in the same bus and wanted to get my attention, but didn't dare to call me by my name so instead she sent me a text message. But truth be told, I just think she's finally assimilating to the true Finnish mentality. Cheers ;D
But before I digress, I admit that I do listen to a lot of music. Whenever I leave the house, I need to have my earphones with me or I get instantly bothered and annoyed. I'm not sure why bringing music with me everywhere I go is compulsory for me but it does keep my mind active at least a little bit, in a positive way. I get ideas better when I have something to listen to and sometimes music helps me to concentrate on whatever I'm trying to concentrate on, though it has to be the exactly correct type of music or it'll do the exact opposite. I easily associate songs with certain periods or certain happenings in my life and sometimes I can't listen to a song because I don't want it to bring back bad memories from a time when something unpleasant took place and I happened to be listening to the song in question. As a follow-up, listening to music while going somewhere usually takes my mind off of the current situation both in good and bad, so perhaps it is partly a method of escapism.
"What kind of music do you listen to?" everyone asks. It's far easier to say what music I DON'T listen to. But to name a few favourite genres, recently my playlists have been littered with mostly different types of electronic music. Current faves include synthwave/retrowave, ambient, chill and indie. I think I've also inherited a like for 70-80's tunes from my mom. I've always been a fan of electronic music, telling my mom at the age of 7 that "disco music is the best" and to add an extra touch of hipsterness, I've never really went with most mainstream big names. The above image is from this year's Spotify's Wrapped, which tells you how many minutes of music you've listened to, your most listened artists and songs based on minutes spent with them and your favourite genre(s). This year's Wrapped also told me that 90% of the music I listen to is non-mainstream, lol. Spotify is also kind enough to form two new playlists for you based on your Wrapped results; the other lists the top 100 songs from your existing playlists and the other, called "Tastebreakers", lists songs based on your existing playlists that you might be interested in. And people still dare call iTunes better? I have to laugh.
Also laughing at the list of favourite artists, every single one of them makes synthwave.
For some reason, my classmate's remark made me feel pretty good. Like damn, yeah, I'm always listening to music. For some reason, it has become a really important part of my life and it's a certain notable feature of me. Other people recognize it too, now that I recall; mom used to call my earbuds "anti-Christs" because they were ALWAYS on and I would miss a lot of her talking for that reason. I also remember having a phase in junior high school when I would always have one earbud on and teachers constantly having to tell me to take it off. Don't tell me what to do! Gladly I don't do that anymore because I know I actually have to listen to the teaching if I want to learn jack shit. A profession would be nice to have and I wanna pay my student loans on time.
Funnily enough, I didn't listen to music much while writing this post. When I really have to concentrate on writing, I can't listen to any kind of songs with words without my mind constantly getting sidetracked (except in situations when I achieve a rare state of hyper-focus flow, one of the rare but good sides of ADD). But when I'm done with this, gotta go fill up my hourly quota.
