>Inscription#0005: "MindTrek"

To be honest, I wasn't hugely excited about MindTrek after looking through the programme online. I'm sure I wasn't alone with that. Anyhow, free tickets that would usually cost like 200€ and free food? Okay alright, I'll try it out. I only went there for one day instead of two since I had something important to do during the second one. Don't remember what it was but it was important.

Aside from the aforementioned pros, there was one thing I was kinda looking forward to; I noticed an ex-colleague of mine was hosting a presentation about the company he works for, the same I had worked for in the past. It's called TeacherGaming and it essentially makes educational versions of video games with a target audience of elementary schoolers. When I was still working for them, I worked on a game called Switch & Glitch, which aims to teach kids the very basics of programming. My first task was to redesign one of the main characters to look tolerable and to this day, my design has stuck and can still be seen in-game. Yay!

I attended the presentation and I can't say I learned much new things since I did have experience with the company already, but it was nice to see Mikael, the representative, after a long break. We exchanged a few words and wished each other well.

Aside from the presentation and the free food, there was one more interesting feature: an interactive robot that apparently is capable of teaching kids language and to converse with them, with certain limitations. It can also be programmed to talk in different languages and it's being updated constantly. The whole time I was looking at it there was a chant in the back of my head telling me "robots will take over and we're all gonna die" which probably has some basis, but the thing was pretty cute regardless. I think he's called Elias. Please don't go rogue.

MndTrek was... an experience, I guess?? Wouldn't do it again unless they keep making good food. I'm a poor student and I follow my nose. The event was not exactly aimed at my interests but it did offer some interesting aspects to think about the future of this type of  technology. Some interesting things are bound to happen sooner than we think. What a time to be alive, as they say.
